Stepping up your “host” game
Evidently, Airbnb is gigantically popular. When it comes to the hospitality they are often mentioned as being on top of their game. More so than hotels, even the top-notch ones. That’s why guests consequently and increasingly prefer to choose a BnB over a hotel room. Nonetheless, there is still a lot to learn from the hotel branch, on many levels. So much so, I have decided to share the most essential ones with you.
The customer is king (and queen)
Airbnb guests expect hotel quality from a BnB. That means amongst other things, quality linens (preferably high-end quality) and towels, and excellent service. If you are looking to guarantee yourself some good reviews, you must envision your Airbnb as a hotel.
How are you going to make sure you deliver a constant quality, specified to the needs of different guests?
What can you do to make your guests feel special?
How much effort would you have to put in, to increase the perception of hospitality and service tremendously?
Responding very quickly, being available at all times, having practical information at arms reach at all times, and facilitating the most luxurious and modern rooms; these are aspects that luxury hotels can offer with ease. At the same time, it’s definitely attainable as a BnB host. Going the extra mile is what will set you apart from the next best home being offered across the street. Which most likely is the case.
Small gestures, giant rewards
Your success will in part depend on a lot of seemingly small things: having a house that is spick & span decorated carefully with attention to detail and providing personalized service. Hotel miniature toiletries are essential nowadays. We simply expect them. Whenever you visit a luxurious setting (or even a sub-luxurious) setting for that matter you will encounter them. There really isn’t any reason not to up the service by getting these items for your home too. Contact a local shop, explain your business, take their card and place it in the bathroom. Perhaps you can get soaps and shampoos at a discount. Alternatively, you can contact an online distributor of organically produced soaps and shampoos!
Having access to a quality bathrobe after a warm shower/bath is exactly what a person needs after a long day of urban exploring. Whatever you do to make your guest’s stay a memorable one, was worth the investment. You could even get them a small welcome gift. So you don’t only mention “home away from home” in your listing. But actually, live up to your claim.
Good reviews, good life
Hotels flourish eagerly through great online social scoring; be it on TripAdvisor or Booking or whichever available platform. The same goes for great Airbnb hosts. It’s an eternal truth we can not do without today. A potential guest will always have a preference for a place that is popular. Because if a place has received ecstatic reviews, there are often good reasons for it. Make sure your guests always leave a review. All you have to do is make sure that they have had a stay worthy of a 5-star rating.
Consequent high-quality service
This is where many hosts can differentiate themselves from other hosts. Competition is at an all-time high nowadays and although you do not run an actual hotel, that does not imply you don’t have to make an attempt to strive toward hotel standards. When guests have inquiries or feel they would like to comment, you should be able to answer them almost immediately. It goes without saying you need to listen to your guest at all times and do your best to take them seriously. Guests want to feel like they are being taken care of. Being disregarded is one of the most stress-inducing elements a guest could possibly experience. Nobody wants to stay somewhere where they feel that their voice is not being heard. Try to remember the times you were amazed at the service you received. Hopefully, you have one such memory.
It’s all about the experience
Airbnb has grown so exponentially in recent years because they focus on ‘the experience’ of (co-)living with locals. Guests arrive at locations they would otherwise not have had access to and sometimes stay in homes they could otherwise never have afforded. To submerse themselves in local culture instead of being tourists.
All of these experiences together often make a stay unforgettable. You can facilitate this by making sure you share the ultimate secrets about the neighborhood (and beyond). For those interested, you can elaborate on the unique aspects of their new home. Make their trip a memorable one.
These are some essentials you can bring into practice. There are much more ways to facilitate a superb experience. I go more in-depth on the ins and outs in my ebook. It includes beginner tips and expert advice for becoming a successful host. Check it out here!
